Not a bad day for punters to end 2020, with a few short-priced favourites crossing the line first at Echuca on Thursday. The easiest win came in race one, with second favourite Lunar Hero ($2.80) winning by five lengths from favourite All Of Brighton in the three-year-old maiden 1000m. Jockey Daniel Stackhouse put the gelding in front by a length at the turn and no-one went near him. Twiggy Pop came in third. Race two was another easy win, this time for $2.30 favourite Pal's Reward who won by 2.5 lengths, but it could have been more. Mallee Hammer edged Lanomroh in a photo for second. It took until the last for another short-priced favourite to show them how it's done. Jealice ($2.30) won the 1400m BM58 Handicap, but was caught three deep mid-race. Jockey Neil Farley moved up at the 300m to challenge High Delta and hit the lead with 100 to go. Jealice won by a length to High Delta with Cape Mount finishing third. It was a tight one in race three, a 1200m maiden, with Ozone taking it by a neck to Fire Wheel. Ozone hit the lead with about 50m to go, passing Loudspeaker who made a fantastic run on the rail to finish fourth. Despite paying $7 Diamond Thoara won easily, even being eased up at the line by jockey Michael Dee in race four over 1200m. The mare beat Malauka by 1.5 lengths and Almighty Will rounded out the placings. Song Brocade ran an excellent race in the fifth over the mile. Back two wide mid-race jockey Jarrod Fry needed to move the four-year-old mare about five off the fence at the turn. She dashed to the front with about 300m to go and held off a challenge by Mach One. Hostile Takeover beat Echo Boomer for third place. Race six over 1000m gave Stackhouse his second win of the day on Hot In Paris who got to Kiata in the last few metres. The two horses ran clear of the rest with about 150m to go with Kiata holding Hot In Paris well. But in the end Hot In Paris was too good. Eastern Pegasus ran third.
